ABOUT VINTAGE MP3s

Since the early days of the internet, I have collected digital music. Over the past two decades, my collection has grown to include hundreds of albums and thousands of songs.

The vast majority of this music is in mint condition – expertly mixed, painstakingly mastered, and therefore, identical to the music that millions of other people own.

My most unique and treasured pieces of digital music, however, are the ones that are imperfect. The ones with odd sound features, unintended digital blips, and obnoxious DJ drops. The ones I had to hunt for.

In today’s streaming-dominated industry, these songs are rare, impossible-to-find cultural artifacts of another era.

Please enjoy my collection of vintage mp3s: listen to them, read their stories, and bask in the glory of a bygone era of terrible, terrible sound quality.

IS THIS REAL?

In a word, kind of. But not really. The mp3s are real, but no mp3s are actually being sold for thousands of dollars. Vintage MP3s is a way for me to write about the songs and technology that helped shape my love of music.

IS THIS LEGAL?

Probably not? But please know that Vintage MP3s is meant to be consumed as satire (ugh, for lack of a better word), not commerce. No money is exchanging hands, and I truly love and respect all the artists featured here. (Even Fred Durst.) Basically, if you have a problem with the content, please contact me. Thanks.

WHY CAN'T I BUY ANY VINTAGE MP3s?

See above. This isn't a real store.
